Bodies of missing girls recovered from Atrai River

Rescuers recovered the bodies of two schoolgirls who went missing while taking a bath in the Atrai River at Bhushirbandar in Dinajpur Sadar upazila.

The deceased were identified as Sharmi Islam, 12, a seventh-grader and daughter of Shafiqul Islam, and Brishti, 10, a fifth-grader and daughter of Babul. Both were residents of Hargaan village under Sundarban Union.

Locals buried both children side by side in a family graveyard at 9:30 AM on Thursday (August 27) following their funeral prayers.

Locals said three girls went to take a bath in the Atrai River near the sluice gate at Beguntara village around 2:30 PM on Wednesday. While bathing, all three submerged underwater. One girl managed to swim ashore, but Sharmi and Brishti drowned.

Hearing the surviving girl’s cries for help, local residents rushed to the scene and searched the river but failed to locate them.

Upon receiving information, Kotwali Police Station notified the local fire service. A fire service rescue team rushed to the scene to initiate search operations, later joined by a diver team from Rangpur.

Rescuers recovered Sharmi’s body around 8:00 PM on Wednesday at the spot of the incident. Later, Brishti’s body was recovered around 5:30 AM on Thursday from Jhanjira Firingir Ghat, about 5 km away from the scene.

Dinajpur Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Nurnabi confirmed the recovery of the bodies and said the victims were laid to rest on Thursday morning.
