PM gives seven directives to ease Dhaka traffic congestion

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday issued seven directives, including the relocation and reorganisation of bus terminals, to ease traffic congestion and modernise traffic management in Dhaka.

The directives were issued at a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister at his Tejgaon office, where traffic congestion, pressure on major roads and flyovers, public transport management, parking facilities and bus terminal reorganisation were discussed.

According to Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Swadhin, the meeting decided to introduce Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) systems at toll plazas on expressways and flyovers.

Authorities were directed to develop the required application and complete the work within four months.

The Prime Minister also asked the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to review its existing reports on easing congestion around the Jatrabari-Gulistan flyover and submit recommendations within 15 days. The city corporations and traffic police will coordinate the implementation.

The meeting decided to relocate Fulbaria Bus Terminal to Keraniganj to reduce pressure from buses and inter-district vehicles in central Dhaka. Necessary land will be acquired through the Local Government Ministry.

As a permanent terminal is a long-term project, an interim bus terminal will be built on 15 acres of land at the Jhilmil project within four months. The rear section of Gabtoli Bus Terminal will also be expanded to improve capacity and vehicle management.

The meeting also decided to relocate the Karwan Bazar kitchen market to Gabtoli as part of efforts to reduce traffic congestion in the capital.

Authorities were asked to explore parking facilities at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium and identify alternative parking locations to reduce congestion around the Secretariat.

A separate policy will also be formulated to regulate the movement of autorickshaws in Dhaka.

The Prime Minister further directed authorities to take action against the operation of unauthorised double-decker sleeper buses and stressed stronger coordination among relevant agencies to implement the decisions within the stipulated timeframe.
