Flood-swept bank locker triggers looting; 29 arrested in Nepal

A bank locker swept away by floodwaters in Nepal was found broken open, with cash allegedly looted from it, leading police to arrest 29 people and recover nearly 9.27 million Nepalese rupees.
The incident occurred in the Bhotekoshi area of Rasuwa district, where a bank locker was carried away by floodwaters. It was later found on the bank of the Trishuli River near Belkhukhola in Ward No. 4 of Galchhi Rural Municipality in Dhading district.
Dhading police said they received information that several locals had broken open the locker and taken the money inside. Police subsequently launched an investigation and detained 29 people during an initial search operation. A total of 9,268,505 Nepalese rupees was recovered from their possession.
Most of those detained are residents of Master area in Galchhi-4. Others are from Adamghat in Galchhi-6 and Adamtar in Siddhalek-7. Some are originally from Chitwan and Parsa but currently live in Dhading. The detainees are aged between 19 and 49.
Police are investigating the source and ownership of the recovered money and whether others were involved in the incident.
Gold Earrings Allegedly Stolen from Flood Victim
In another incident, two people were arrested in Nepal for allegedly stealing gold earrings from the body of a woman who had been swept away by floodwaters in the Narayani River.
The incident came to light after a video circulated on social media. The video allegedly showed two men removing gold earrings from the body of a woman who had been carried away by the floodwaters.
Nepal Flood Death Toll Rises to 626
Meanwhile, the death toll from the devastating floods in Nepal has risen to 626, while 2,426 people remain missing, according to the country's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority on Saturday.
The number of missing people stood at 1,924 on Friday night. The number of missing foreign nationals remained unchanged at 517.
Rescue and search operations are still underway in several parts of the country three days after the floods. Authorities warned that the number of casualties and missing people could change as the operations continue.
