Malaysia is preparing to invest roughly $2 billion in Bangladesh across sectors highlighting electric vehicles (EV), solar power, and halal food - said LGRD State Minister Meer Shahe Alam.

He also mentioned that discussions regarding the recruitment of nearly 200,000 workers from Bangladesh have advanced.

Recruitment may begin in phases by late September and is expected to finish within six months.

The State Minister disclosed this to reporters on Sunday (August 30) at the Secretariat following a courtesy meeting with Malaysian High Commissioner Mohammad Suhada Bin Osman.

The State Minister stated that the meeting focused on strengthening friendly ties between the two countries and covered various aspects of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to Malaysia.

Currently, around 800,000 registered Bangladeshi workers are residing in Malaysia. Additionally, unregistered workers are also living there. State Minister in the meeting requested the Malaysian High Commissioner to bring them under registration.

State Minister further noted, approximately 10,000 Bangladeshi students are studying in various universities in Malaysia. Contrarily, nearly 1,000 Malaysian students are pursuing degrees in Dhaka Medical College, Mymensingh Medical College, and other institutions in Bangladesh.

The State Minister added that Bangladesh plans to seek technical support from Malaysia for using rubberized bitumen. Despite heavy rainfall in Malaysia, carpeted roads there remain relatively durable. Roads mixed with rubber do not easily deteriorate during the monsoon.

Meer Shahe Alam said the government plans to gradually introduce rubberized bitumen for constructing, repairing, and maintaining rural roads. Malaysia will provide technical assistance in this regard.

Expressing interest in EV, solar power, and halal food sectors, the State Minister said Malaysia wants to invest in electric vehicles, solar panels, renewable energy, and halal food processing. Preparations are underway for an investment of around $2 billion, and Malaysian officials assured that the investment process will begin soon.
