Bangladesh sees no risk in Mecca agreement: State minister

Bangladesh sees no risk in the recently signed “Mecca agreement” involving Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir has said.

Speaking to reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, he described the initiative as a new and unique opportunity, citing Bangladesh’s long experience and expertise in promoting international peace and stability.

Asked about possible risks associated with the agreement, Humayun Kabir said Bangladesh would maintain a balanced approach in its foreign relations and continue to support peace and stability worldwide.

He said Bangladesh's experience in UN peacekeeping operations could contribute to efforts aimed at addressing challenges facing the Muslim world.

The state minister said discussions on the agreement with the relevant parties, including Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, were progressing positively. However, Bangladesh has yet to receive any formal invitation regarding the initiative.

He said the government would inform the media if and when a formal invitation was received.

Humayun Kabir also met Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen, British High Commissioner Sarah Cook and the Saudi ambassador on Sunday, where they discussed matters of mutual interest and ways to strengthen bilateral relations.
