Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar water levels may rise for three days

Water levels of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in northern Bangladesh may continue to rise over the next three days amid forecasts of moderate to heavy rainfall in four divisions, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said on Monday (August 31).

However, water levels of all major rivers in the country are currently below their respective danger levels.

According to a rainfall, river situation and forecast issued by Mustafa Kamal Jihan, assistant engineer of the FFWC under the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-North Odisha coast has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area.

The system is currently located over Gangetic West Bengal, adjoining North Odisha and the northwest Bay of Bengal and is likely to move west-northwestwards.

Weather agencies have forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in Sylhet, Mymensingh, Rangpur and Chattogram divisions and adjoining areas over the next three days.

The Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers have seen a steady rise in water levels over the past 24 hours, and their levels are expected to increase further over the next three days.

The Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers have also risen over the past 24 hours and may continue to rise for the next three days before remaining stable for another two days.

Meanwhile, water levels in the Ganges-Padma rivers have increased over the past 24 hours and are expected to remain stable for the next five days. The Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Ganges-Padma rivers are likely to remain below their danger levels.

In the northeast, water levels in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers have fallen over the past 24 hours and may decline further over the next day. However, they may rise again over the following two days.

The FFWC said all major rivers in the country are currently flowing below their danger levels.
