The West Bengal government is planning to form a new force named the ‘Arjun Force’ to deal with emergencies in the Sundarbans and hilly areas, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has said.
The force will initially comprise 200 retired Indian Army personnel aged below 40, according to the chief minister’s announcement on Tuesday.
He said former Agniveers would be given preference for recruitment to the force in the future.
The force will be modelled on the National Disaster Response Force and trained to operate in difficult and hazardous conditions.
Adhikari said personnel would be deployed in areas prone to disasters, including the Sundarbans and the hills. The force will also be provided with modern infrastructure and equipment.
The force chief will receive a monthly salary of Rs40,000, while members will receive Rs25,000, with salaries increasing by 3 per cent annually.
The state government will also provide financial assistance of Rs1 million in case of a member’s death and Rs500,000 in case of permanent disability caused by serious injuries.
