Women’s economic empowerment requires training in modern trades based on market demand rather than confining them to traditional areas, said Women and Children’s Affairs and Social Welfare Minister Professor Dr AZM Zahid Hossain.

“In order to make women economically self reliant, training will be provided in modern trades considering the needs of the market, going beyond the traditional channels,” he said.

The minister was speaking as chief guest at a grant distribution ceremony for the 2025-26 fiscal year among voluntary women’s associations registered with the Department of Women’s Affairs at Bangladesh Shishu Academy in Dhaka on Wednesday.

He said government support would, in future, be extended to relevant associations and organisations on the basis of their performance and skills demonstrated at the field level.

Zahid Hossain said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was working with all stakeholders to build an inclusive, humane and discrimination free Bangladesh.

He said the government’s objective was to establish a society in which people would rise above narrow individual interests and work collectively for the welfare of the country.

Referring to the government’s election manifesto, the minister said Family Cards were being issued on the basis of equality and fairness, irrespective of religion, caste, geographical identity or political ideology.
