Match fees doubled, domestic cricketers to earn up to Tk 35 lakh a year

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced a doubling of match fees across all formats of domestic cricket, a move that could raise the annual earnings of domestic cricketers to as much as Tk 35 lakh.
BCB President Tamim Iqbal made the announcement at a hastily convened press conference in Mirpur on Thursday. The decision comes just two days after the board met with the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), where it had promised to increase match fees in domestic competitions.
After taking charge as chairman of the ad hoc committee in May, Tamim had raised the match fee for first-class cricket from Tk 75,000 to Tk 1 lakh. Six months later, it has now been increased further to Tk 1.5 lakh per match. The decision, however, does not cover Dhaka club cricket.
In the one-day format of the National Cricket League (NCL) and Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL), players previously received Tk 50,000 per match. The fee has now been doubled to Tk 1 lakh. In T20 competitions, the match fee has increased from Tk 40,000 to Tk 80,000.
The decision comes amid uncertainty over players’ earnings following the BCB’s earlier announcement that it no longer wants to organise the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in an improvised manner. Since the BPL is a major source of income for domestic cricketers, the prospect of not holding the tournament had raised concerns among players.
Tamim also indicated that match fees could be increased further in the future. “When we review this again two years from now, if the BCB’s position is good and our income increases further, we will raise it again,” he said.
According to the BCB president, the increased match fees could allow a domestic cricketer to earn between Tk 30 lakh and Tk 35 lakh annually. However, he stressed that players would also be expected to demonstrate greater professionalism alongside improved financial benefits.
“We expect them to fulfil their responsibilities as well. There has been a lot of discussion about professionalism in first-class cricket, and there will be no compromise on that. If someone fails to pass the fitness test and then makes a request regarding it, such requests will not be entertained,” Tamim said.
The BCB expects the increase in match fees to provide greater financial security for domestic cricketers while encouraging them to maintain higher standards of professionalism both on and off the field.
