Prophet remarks case: Ifthekhar Anik on 5-day remand

A Dhaka court on Thursday placed Ifthekhar Anik(33) on five-day police remand in a case filed over allegedly derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Islam on Facebook.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam Sohag granted the remand after South Keraniganj police sought seven days. No lawyer appeared for Anik during the hearing.

According to the case documents, Anik allegedly made offensive posts and comments from his Facebook account, “Iftekhar Anik,” hurting religious sentiments. On August 27, local residents confronted him at his home over the posts. He allegedly tore religious books and fled.

Police arrested Anik from Cox’s Bazar’s Kalatali area on August 29. They later seized a Motorola smartphone and an HP laptop from his home.

The investigating officer sought remand to investigate the allegations and determine whether others were involved. The court granted five days.

Meanwhile, several hundred people gathered outside the court demanding punishment for the accused and staged protests carrying banners and placards.
