Water levels may rise in Brahmaputra-Jamuna, several other rivers

Water levels in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna, Ganges and several other major rivers may rise over the next few days as moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast in several parts of the country, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said on Friday.

The centre said moderate to heavy rainfall may occur over Chattogram, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and adjoining upstream areas over the next three days.

The forecast comes as a low-pressure area over Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas is gradually weakening and may merge with the axis of the monsoon.

Water levels in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Ganges rose over the past 24 hours, while the Padma fell. The FFWC said water levels in these rivers may continue to rise over the next five days, although they are expected to remain below the danger level.

In the northern region, the Teesta also recorded a rise in water level over the past 24 hours, while the Dharla and Dudhkumar remained stable. Their water levels may rise over the next three days.

In Chattogram division, water levels in the Muhuri, Feni, Selonia, Halda, Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers increased over the past 24 hours, while the Gumti fell. The levels are expected to remain stable for the next day before declining over the following two days.

Meanwhile, water levels in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers in the northeast fell over the past 24 hours and are expected to remain stable over the next three days.
