Ahsan Labib, a Jahangirnagar University (JU) student and senior vice president of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, has been appointed acting president of the organisation.

Labib, who is an accused in the murder case over the killing of former Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Shamim Molla, was appointed at the organisation’s fifth general meeting on Wednesday following the resignation of its president Zahid Ahsan, according to a press release.

A student of the Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering from the 2019-20 academic session, Labib previously served as a coordinator of the JU unit of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

He is also the social welfare secretary of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) and an elected member of the JU Senate.

According to university sources, a group of students allegedly beat Shamim Molla to death after he entered the JU campus on September 18, 2024. Two days later, a murder case was filed with Ashulia Police Station against eight students, including Labib, and 20-25 unnamed people.  Jatiya Chhatra Shakti Central Committee Office Secretary Mahfuzur Rahman said Labib was made acting president to ensure continuity of the organisation’s activities following Zahid Ahsan’s resignation.
