The United States has approved a proposed $5 billion sale of bombs, guidance kits and other military equipment to Saudi Arabia amid ongoing regional tensions involving Iran.
The approval was announced on Friday, according to AFP.
The US State Department said the proposed sale would strengthen Saudi Arabia’s air defence capabilities against current and future regional threats, reinforce its ability to defend itself and improve interoperability with US forces and other partners in the Gulf.
It said the sale would also support US foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the security of a major non-NATO ally.
Saudi Arabia has faced repeated drone and missile attacks by Iranian forces and Yemen’s Houthi rebels since the US and Israel launched their war against Iran earlier this year.
The State Department has notified the US Congress about the proposed deal. However, the sale still requires approval from US lawmakers before it can be finalised.
