Observer Online Report

Police have detained the alleged boyfriend of a Class VII student who was raped and murdered in Cumilla Sadar upazila from Cox’s Bazar.

The detainee is Riaz Uddin held from the Kalatali area of Cox’s Bazar town around 10:000 PM on Sunday, October 11.

Sheikh Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed the detention, saying Raju was held on suspicion of involvement in the murder of the girl, identified as Tajmin Akter, 15.

According to the OC, Raju allegedly lured Tajmin to Cox’s Bazar. Police are considering whether to show him arrested in the case filed in Cumilla.

The OC said Raju and Tajmin became acquainted and developed a romantic relationship through Instagram.

According to Raju, they arrived in Cox’s Bazar early on September 6 and checked into a residential hotel in Kalatali, introducing themselves as husband and wife.

Tajmin left for Cumilla alone the following afternoon and was brutally murdered on her way, he reportedly told police.

Earlier, CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver Sumon Mia confessed to raping and murdering the student after taking her to an isolated place on the pretext of helping her reach home via a shortcut. Police have already arrested him in connection with the incident.
