At least 10 people were injured and several houses were vandalised in a clash between two groups over local dominance in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah on Saturday morning.

The incident took place in Dalilpur village following a dispute between supporters of local influential figure Shahin Biswas and Abu Zahid, according to police and locals.

The two groups had reportedly been at odds for a long time over control in the area. The latest clash began after supporters of the groups got into an argument over fertiliser in neighbouring Nagirat village earlier in the morning.

The dispute later escalated in Dalilpur, where supporters of both sides attacked each other with locally made weapons, leaving at least 10 people injured. Several houses were also vandalised.

Police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. Additional police have been deployed in the area to prevent further clashes.

Rana Hossain, a businessman from Dalilpur, alleged that 300-400 people suddenly arrived in the area and vandalised his house and shop, along with around 10 other houses. He estimated his losses at Tk 5-6 lakh.

Shahin Hossain said he was unaware of what had happened in the morning but alleged that the houses and shops of his supporters were attacked, vandalised and looted. He claimed that the homes and businesses of 10 of his supporters were damaged.

Zahidul Islam said he heard about a disturbance at Nagirat Bazar before finding a clash underway in the village, but said he did not know what had triggered it.

Shailkupa Police Station Officer-in-Charge Humayun Kabir Molla said police were sent to the area immediately after receiving information about the clash between the two groups.
