State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Aminul Haque has said the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) should be held every year, stressing the need for continuity in popular sporting events.
“I think tournaments like this should be held every year. So, there is a need to discuss why it has not been held. We will certainly keep an eye on ensuring that such tournaments are organised regularly in the future,” he said.
The minister made the remarks while speaking to reporters at an event on Sunday.
Aminul said he was unaware that the BPL would not be held this year, saying he had learned about the decision from reporters.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has decided not to hold the BPL this year as it seeks to reform the franchise-based tournament and develop a new, sustainable model. Representatives of Rangpur Riders, Rajshahi Warriors and Dhaka Capitals have backed the reform process.
BCB President Tamim Iqbal had earlier said the board would not rush to organise the tournament under the existing system and wanted to address its financial, contractual and compliance issues first.
