Husband shot wife while intoxicated, RAB says

A man allegedly shot his wife during an argument while intoxicated and later handed the weapon to his son to hide it, RAB-4 said on Sunday.
The elite force arrested the man, his son and the son’s friend in connection with the shooting in Darus Salam, Dhaka.
The arrestees are the woman’s husband, Md Abdul Mannan alias Abdul Hannan, 45, his son Md Rakib, 25, and Rakib’s friend Md Hatim Mia, 21.
RAB-4 Commander Lt Col Md Hafizur Rahman disclosed the information at a press briefing at the RAB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar on Sunday afternoon.
He said Mannan, who was intoxicated, shot his wife following an argument at their home in the Mosjid Goli area of Darus Salam on Saturday night.
The woman, identified as Jesmin Akter, was first taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment. She is currently undergoing treatment there.
RAB said its intelligence-led investigation found that Mannan was responsible for the shooting. A team arrested him in Darus Salam around 3:30am and recovered 215 yaba tablets from his possession.
According to RAB, Mannan told investigators that he handed the firearm to his son Rakib after the shooting and asked him to hide it. RAB-4 and Darus Salam police later arrested Rakib, who said he had handed the weapon to his friend Hatim.
A joint team subsequently raided Hatim’s house and recovered a pistol, a magazine and two live rounds from a drawer inside a wardrobe. RAB said the recovered firearm was used in the shooting.
RAB said Mannan’s son had initially claimed that unidentified attackers fired at his mother through a window. Investigation later found that the claim was fabricated and that the shooting took place inside the house.
Hafizur Rahman said Mannan was a drug addict and allegedly involved in drug dealing. He said the couple frequently quarrelled over his drug use and related issues.
RAB said it found no information suggesting that Jesmin was involved in drugs. It also said there was no evidence that Rakib was a drug addict, but he was arrested for helping to conceal the firearm.
Mannan has three previous cases filed with different police stations, according to RAB.
