Tk 60,000 cr agricultural loan target set for FY 2026-27

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury informed Parliament on Sunday (September 6) that the government has set a target to disburse Tk 60,000 crore in agricultural credit through scheduled banks in the 2026-27 fiscal year.

Replying to a query from MP Farida Yasmin, the Minister outlined the allocation breakdown, stating that 55 per cent of the total loans will go to crops and harvests, 2 per cent to irrigation and agricultural machinery, 13 per cent to fisheries, 20 per cent to livestock including poultry and dairy, and the remaining 10 per cent to off-farm rural economic activities.

He highlighted key central bank initiatives, including a Tk 10,000 crore refinancing scheme formed to boost domestic food production and a Tk 3,000 crore special refinancing scheme dedicated to developing agro-based economic hubs in the northern region.

The Minister added that Bangladesh Bank has raised its refinancing fund for setting up agricultural processing industries from Tk 1,400 crore to Tk 2,000 crore. Under this scheme, entrepreneurs can secure loans up to Tk 100 crore for a maximum term of seven years at a 7 per cent interest rate, with priority given to enterprises located in rural areas.
