Bangladesh Bank has increased the annual foreign currency limit for Bangladeshi citizens traveling abroad from $12,000 to $18,000 to meet genuine demand for foreign exchange related to travel.

In a circular issued on Sunday (6 September), the central bank amended the existing travel facility, raising the annual foreign exchange spending limit for adult Bangladeshi citizens residing in the country.

Authorized Dealer (AD) banks can now release a maximum of $18,000 or its equivalent in foreign currency to an adult Bangladeshi citizen for foreign travel in a calendar year. The previous limit was $12,000.

Bangladesh Bank said the decision takes into account the evolving needs of international travel and aims to fulfill the legitimate foreign currency requirements of Bangladeshi citizens.

The new ceiling applies on a calendar-year basis. For minors under the age of 12, the allowance remains unchanged at 50 percent of the adult limit.
The existing restriction on cash US dollar notes also remains unchanged. Within the annual travel quota, an individual may still carry a maximum of $5,000 in cash dollar notes.
