A Dhaka court on Sunday remanded a Bangladesh Biman assistant technical helper for five days in a case filed over the alleged smuggling of nearly Tk25.2 crore worth of gold through Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin passed the order against Md Soaib Kazi Sajib(31) after police sought a 10-day remand. Defence lawyer Md Shahidul Islam opposed the plea and sought bail.

Police said 120 gold bars weighing 13.992kg were recovered from Biman flight BG-148/AJS after it arrived in Dhaka from Dubai via Chattogram on September 5.

According to police, Sajib was seen moving suspiciously inside the aircraft cabin and allegedly threw a packet containing the gold bars after noticing security personnel. The 24-carat gold was estimated to be worth around Tk25.20 crore.

Police alleged that Sajib is an active member of an international gold-smuggling syndicate and had been involved in evading customs duties by illegally bringing gold into Bangladesh.
