Nepal halts power supply to Bangladesh for 12 days

Nepal has stopped supplying electricity to Bangladesh for the past 12 days after floods damaged several hydropower plants in the country.

According to data on Power Grid Bangladesh PLC’s website, no electricity has been received from Nepal since August 27.

Bangladesh received 38 megawatts of electricity from Nepal during the daytime peak period on August 27, but there was no supply during the evening peak. The supply was then suspended.

Nepal exports electricity to Bangladesh through India’s transmission network. The Kathmandu Post reported that severe flooding in the Bhotekoshi River area on August 26 damaged hydropower projects, disrupting Nepal’s electricity exports.

Two hydropower projects approved to supply electricity to Bangladesh�"the 22.1MW Chilime Hydropower Project and the 24MW Trishuli Hydropower Project�"were also affected by the floods. Power generation at both plants has remained suspended since last week.

Nepal had been exporting around 1,000MW of electricity during the monsoon season, but its total exports have now fallen to about 650MW.

The disruption comes shortly after Nepal began supplying electricity to Bangladesh through India’s transmission network as part of efforts to establish itself as a regional power exporter.
