Flood risk looms as Ganges, Gorai water levels rise

Water levels in the Ganges and Gorai rivers may reach the warning level within the next 24 to 48 hours, potentially causing temporary flooding in some low-lying areas, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said.

According to the FFWC forecast report issued on Saturday, parts of Chapainawabganj, Faridpur, Rajbari and Magura are at risk.

Water levels in major rivers across the country are currently below the danger level, the report said.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is likely in the northern, northeastern and southeastern hilly regions and adjoining upstream areas over the next few days.

The Ganges is currently stable and is expected to remain so for the next two days before falling over the following three days. The Padma rose over the past 24 hours but may remain stable for the next five days.

Due to the rise in the Ganges, water levels in parts of Chapainawabganj may reach the warning level within the next 24 to 48 hours.

The Gorai and Mathabhanga rivers also rose over the past 24 hours. Both rivers may rise further over the next day before remaining stable for the following two days.

Water levels in the Gorai may reach the warning level within the next 24 to 48 hours in parts of Faridpur, Rajbari and Magura, potentially causing temporary flooding in some low-lying areas along the river.

In the Sylhet region, water levels in the Manu, Dhalai and Khowai rivers rose over the past 24 hours and may rise further over the next day before falling over the following two days.

The Surma remained stable over the past 24 hours and may fall over the next three days. The Kushiyara fell during the period but may rise over the next day before remaining stable for the following two days.

In the northern region, water levels in the Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers remained stable and are expected to remain so over the next three days.

The Teesta fell over the past 24 hours and may remain stable for the next day before declining over the following two days.
