PM to visit US on Sept 21 for UNGA

Prime Minister will leave for the United States on September 21 to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Foreign Affairs State Minister Humayun Kabir said on Sunday.
Speaking at a press conference at the Foreign Ministry, Kabir said the prime minister would hold several bilateral and sideline meetings with world leaders during the New York visit.
He said Bangladesh’s new vision and priorities would be presented on the global stage, while issues of national interest would also be discussed in the meetings.
Dhaka seeks new ties with India
On relations with India, Kabir said Bangladesh wanted to build a new and effective bilateral relationship with its neighbour.
He said issues including border killings would be resolved through diplomatic discussions.
Criticism over Saima Wazed’s WHO appointment
The state minister criticised the appointment process of Saima Wazed, former WHO South-East Asia regional director.
He said she did not have the required qualifications for the position and alleged that the appointment process was flawed and tainted by corruption.
Bangladesh has decided to support the Maldives’ candidate for the next appointment to the WHO regional post, he said.
Rohingya crisis to remain a priority
Kabir said Bangladesh would organise a special sideline meeting during the US visit to discuss the Rohingya crisis.
He said the issue would receive particular attention during meetings with world leaders.
Efforts to recover laundered money
On recovering money siphoned abroad, Kabir said Bangladesh had already started working to bring back funds illegally transferred out of the country.
The government is also working to secure international cooperation in the process, he said.
