President urges zero tolerance for corruption

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has directed administrators of district councils to remain active and vigilant in eliminating corruption and irregularities left behind by the previous regime.

He made these remarks when administrators of 33 district councils paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban on Sunday, according to the President’s Press Wing.

Emphasising the need to institutionalise democracy, the President stated that strengthening local government is essential for making democracy stronger.

“Local government is the greatest strength of democracy,” he said, urging the district council administrators to work actively and cautiously to overcome corruption and irregularities inherited from the previous regime.

During the meeting, the administrators presented various demands before the President, including upgrading their status.

The President assured them that the government would take prompt steps to address their concerns, stating, “This is a government of the people.”

He mentioned that the government is prioritizing strengthening the local government system as part of its efforts to decentralise power.

The President also recalled with appreciation the active participation of  district council administrators in the movement for restoring democracy and opposing fascism.
