Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Neymar will not play for the national team again.

Neymar hinted at retirement after Brazil lost to Norway in the World Cup last-16 match. He was also left out of Brazil’s latest squad for matches against Australia and India.

Speaking to CNN Esportes, Ancelotti said the decision was Neymar’s own.

“Neymar has confirmed that he does not want to return to the national team. He cannot be replaced because he is a special and unique player,” Ancelotti said.

Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano had earlier reported on X that Neymar had retired from international football. Neymar said he had tried his best and that his journey had ended at MetLife Stadium.

Neymar made his Brazil debut in 2010 and played in four World Cups. He won an Olympic silver medal in 2012 and helped Brazil win Olympic gold in 2016.

The 34-year-old ended his Brazil career with 80 goals in 129 matches, making him the country’s highest scorer.
