22-day ban on hilsa fishing, trading from October 8

The government has imposed a 22-day nationwide ban on hilsa fishing from October 8 to 29 to ensure the safe breeding of mother hilsa. Transport, storage, marketing, buying, selling and exchange of hilsa will also remain prohibited during the period.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Taskforce Committee for Hilsa Resource Development on Tuesday to set the dates for the fishing ban during the peak breeding season and discuss implementation of the mother-hilsa conservation campaign. Fisheries and Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammad Amin ur Rashid chaired the meeting at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.

During the ban, the government will provide VGF food assistance to fishermen who refrain from fishing.

The minister said there would be no compromise on protecting mother hilsa to ensure sustainable production. He called for stronger monitoring and drives in major breeding grounds, including Barishal, Chandpur and Bhola.

He directed the district administrations, river police, Coast Guard and fisheries authorities to work together to enforce the ban. Additional boats and logistical support will be provided at key hotspots if necessary, he said.

He also called for increased monitoring of ice plants, fish landing centres and markets to prevent the sale of illegally caught hilsa, and urged strict drives against illegal fishing nets in breeding grounds, including the Chandpur confluence.

Fisheries and Livestock State Minister Sultan Salahuddin Tuku said research was needed to identify the reasons behind the declining hilsa production and determine gaps in existing measures.

He stressed the need to stop the production and sale of banned fishing nets and ensure that government incentives reach genuine fishermen during the fishing ban.

He said the need to import fish from abroad due to declining hilsa production was a matter of concern. An integrated action plan would be taken to protect hilsa as a national resource and GI product and increase its production, he added.

Officials from the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation, Department of Fisheries, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute and other relevant government agencies attended the meeting.
