A crude bomb exploded outside Bangladesh’s Supreme Court in Dhaka on Tuesday, shortly after the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced seven senior Awami League leaders, including former party General Secretary Obaidul Quader, to death over crimes against humanity committed during the July Uprising in 2024.

The explosion took place at about 1:15pm near the entrance used by the chief justice and other judges, Shahbagh Police Station chief Md Moniruzzaman said.

“Someone threw the crude bomb, which exploded,” he said, adding that police were investigating the incident and working to identify those responsible. No casualties were reported.

The tribunal handed down death sentences to the seven leaders over their alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during the uprising, which led to the ouster of the Awami League government in August 2024.
