Deputy Commissioner (Gulshan Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) M Tanvir Ahmed and Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gulshan Model Police Station Daud Hossain have been withdrawn and attached to the DMP headquarters.

The DMP headquarters issued separate office orders in this regard on Wednesday. According to the orders, the decisions were taken for administrative reasons.

The punitive action against the DC and OC came five days after leaders and activists of the Awami League, which faces a ban on its activities, brought out a procession in the Gulshan area of Dhaka on September 11.

Police said the marchers threw crude bombs when officers moved to disperse them. Police responded by firing two rounds of rubber bullets, bringing the procession to an end. Five unexploded crude bombs were also recovered from the scene.

A case was filed with Gulshan Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act, naming 118 people and accusing another 80"100 unidentified suspects.

As of Sept 14, police had arrested 83 people in connection with the case, while 24 of them had been placed on remand for questioning.

Daud’s removal came five days after the incident, though the DMP order did not cite the Gulshan flash march or the subsequent police action as the reason for his transfer.
