US approves potential $24.3b F-35 jet sale to Saudis

The State Department noted that the proposed sale aims to enhance Saudi Arabia's self-defense capabilities and improve interoperability with United States forces, strengthening air-to-air and air-to-ground defense operations across the region.

Saudi Arabia has long sought the advanced F-35 aircraft, which currently are operated exclusively by Israel in the Middle East. Addressing past security concerns raised by Israeli officials, the State Department confirmed the transaction will not alter the basic military balance in the region, preserving Israel's qualitative military edge under long-standing US policy.

The Saudi Embassy in Washington welcomed the approval, stating that the agreement highlights the enduring strength of the bilateral relationship and contributes to regional defense stability.

Despite executive clearance, the deal faces scrutiny in the US Congress, where lawmakers have expressed concerns regarding technology safeguards and potential intelligence risks. The proposed sale follows recent US approvals for munition packages and military hardware for the kingdom.
