B'desh urges Bhutan support to revive SAARC

Bangladesh has sought Bhutan’s support for reviving the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) for the collective benefit of the region and its people.

Foreign Affairs State Minister Humayun Kabir and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Dr Abdul Moin Khan made the request to Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay during his transit stop at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Friday (September 18).

Tobgay arrived at the airport at around 1:55pm while travelling to Germany. On behalf of Prime Minister Tareque Rahman, Kabir and Khan warmly received the Bhutanese premier.

During the meeting, the two Bangladeshi ministers praised the longstanding friendly relations between Bangladesh and Bhutan, noting that Bhutan was the first country to recognise Bangladesh in 1971.

They also discussed various issues of mutual interest and expressed Bangladesh’s interest in contributing to the development of Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), particularly through the supply of professional, skilled and semi-skilled workers.

Recalling late President Ziaur Rahman’s vision of a developed and prosperous South Asia, the ministers sought Bhutan’s support for revitalising SAARC and strengthening regional cooperation for the collective welfare of the people.

The Bhutanese ambassador to Bangladesh and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were present during the meeting.

Prime Minister Tobgay stayed at the VVIP Lounge of the airport for about an hour before departing for Germany.
