House of ‘rapist, murderer’ demolished in Pabna

PABNA, Sept 19: Local people have vandalised and demolished the house of the prime suspect in the rape and murder of a 10-year-old schoolgirl in Pabna Sadar Upazila, during the last two days, police said on Saturday.

The two-storey house of Mostafa Kamal, 55, in Kulunia Village was reduced to rubble after crowds began attacking it from Friday afternoon. Armed with hammers and crowbars, hundreds of villagers overwhelmed police forces deployed at the scene.

Kamrunnahar Koli, a class four student, went missing on September 9 after leaving home to buy ice cream. Police recovered her body stuffed in a sack from a nearby ditch on September 16. Investigators said Kamal and an accomplice, Yasin, lured the girl into the house, raped and strangled her, and severed her legs to fit her body into the sack.

Kamal staged a farce of searching for the victim, even joining a protest demanding her recovery before his arrest.

Police produced the two suspects in court on Friday and sought a five-day remand. A hearing is scheduled for Sunday.
 
Officer-in-Charge of Pabna Sadar Police Station Tarikul Islam said additional forces were deployed to restore order following the destruction.
