Taskin sits out as Bangladesh look beyond one Test

Bangladesh have chosen to look beyond their next Test as they prepare to face Afghanistan in the UAE, with Taskin Ahmed rested from the one-off match and two familiar faces returning to the squad.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has left out Taskin and Nahid Rana as part of a workload plan aimed at keeping its fast bowlers available for the more demanding Test assignments later in the year. 

Chief selector Habibul Bashar said the selectors want Taskin fresh for the two-Test home series against the West Indies. Nahid, meanwhile, is expected to become available from October 10 after recovering from injury.

The decision gives Bangladesh an opportunity to examine the pace resources beyond their first-choice options.

Hasan Mahmud, Khaled Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain and Shoriful Islam make up the pace group for the Afghanistan Test, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam provide the main spin options. Three more players-Nayeem Hasan, Musfik Hasan and Iqbal Hossain Emon-will travel as reserves.

The batting group also gains two additions.

Towhid Hridoy returns after his remarkable unbeaten 350 for Bangladesh A in South Africa, while Jaker Ali Anik has been recalled as the second wicketkeeping option alongside Litton Das. Amite Hasan, who was part of the recent Test squad, misses out this time.

The Afghanistan Test begins on October 9 and will be Bangladesh's next assignment after their historic Test victory in Darwin helped them draw the series in Australia 1-1.

For the selectors, the UAE match is therefore more than a one-off fixture. It is also an early test of whether Bangladesh have enough depth to manage a busy Test season without overworking their leading players.
