India sets T20 world record defending lowest score against Japan

In their first-ever T20 international encounter against Japan, India narrowly escaped an upset to secure a thrill-packed 2-run victory after posting just 32 runs in a rain-curtailed five-over match.

Heavy rains over two consecutive days delayed pitch preparation, reducing the contest to five overs per side on a slow, spin-friendly wicket where all ten overs were bowled by spinners and only four boundaries were hit in total.

Opting to bat after winning the toss, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer top-scored with 16 off 12 balls to guide India to 32 for 4 in their allotted five overs, following a first-ball duck by opener Abhishek Sharma.

In response, Japan faced early trouble when opener Lachlan Yamamoto-Lake was run out by a direct hit from Ishan Kishan off Axar Patel's opening over.

Despite losing two wickets for 7 runs, Japan bounced back by taking 17 runs combined off the third and fourth overs bowled by Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar, leaving them needing 8 runs off the final over.

Axar Patel maintained exceptional control in the nerve-wracking final over, conceding just 5 runs to restrict Japan to 30 runs, completing the lowest total ever successfully defended in T20 international history.
