MP Gazi Nazrul’s wife sent to jail after remand

A court in Dhaka has sent the wife of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam to jail after she completed a one-day remand in a case filed over the alleged abetment of his second wife’s suicide.

On Tuesday, DB police Inspector Mohammad Salauddin of the Tejgaon Zonal Team produced Mosa. Maksuda Islam before the court after the remand and sought an order to keep her in jail.

Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the order following the hearing.

On Monday, Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam had granted one day’s remand for Maksuda and four days’ remand for Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam.

Police recovered the hanging body of Nazrul’s second wife, Mariam, from a flat at NAM Bhaban opposite the Parliament complex on the evening of September 20. Police later took MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife Maksuda into custody.

On September 21, Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station accusing Gazi Nazrul Islam, his wife Maksuda Islam and Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman of abetting suicide under Section 306 of the Penal Code.

According to the case statement, Masum Billah is a grocery shopkeeper and Mariam, 19, married Gazi Nazrul Islam, 75, under Islamic law in June.

After the marriage, Mariam lived with her husband and his first wife, Mosa. Maksuda, at a flat in NAM Bhaban in the Manik Mia Avenue area under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

The case statement alleges that Mariam was subjected to physical and mental abuse by her husband and co-wife over various issues after the marriage. She reportedly informed family members about the alleged abuse by phone on several occasions.

It further says that at around 3:30 PM on September 20, Nazrul called Mariam’s father and asked him to go to the flat immediately.

When he arrived, he allegedly found Mariam hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf around her neck. The door was locked from inside. With the help of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police, they broke open the door and found her hanging from the fan.
