HC halts recruitment for 13 teaching posts at JnU

The High Court has suspended the recruitment process for 13 teaching positions at Jagannath University (JnU), including two assistant professors and 11 lecturers.

The court also issued a rule asking why the university’s recruitment circular and all subsequent proceedings should not be declared without lawful authority.

The suspension will remain in effect until disposal of the rule, effectively putting on hold the recruitment circular issued by the university on August 25.

An HC bench comprising Justice Bhishmadev Chakraborty and Justice Sheikh Tahsin Ali passed the order on Tuesday after the preliminary hearing of a writ petition.

The state has said it will challenge the High Court order before the Appellate Division.

Advocate Abeda Gulrukh appeared for the writ petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Jasim Sarker, Mohammad Imam Hossain Tarek and Barrister Shihab Uddin Khan represented the state.

On August 25, Jagannath University authorities published the recruitment circular inviting applications for two assistant professor and 11 lecturer positions across several departments.

The deadline for submitting applications was September 16, 2026.

Lawyer Bijoya Rani Tikadar, who practises at the Dhaka courts, filed the writ petition challenging the legality of the recruitment circular.

The petition alleged that the circular was not consistent with the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines on the recruitment of teachers.

The court's order means the recruitment process for the 13 posts will remain suspended while the legal challenge is pending.
