Hospitals across Bangladesh are struggling with a shortage of beds amid a rise in dengue cases, prompting doctors to advise stable patients to continue treatment and monitoring at home.
The pressure on hospitals is expected to increase as dengue cases usually peak in late September and early October. Patients who are not in critical condition but require rest and regular monitoring may be cared for at home following consultation with a doctor.
Elderly people, patients with chronic illnesses and those recovering from surgery may also require home-based care.
Doctors say proper arrangements at home can make patient care safer and more comfortable. Adjustable hospital beds can help patients maintain suitable positions, while side rails can reduce the risk of falls. Wheeled beds can also make it easier for caregivers to move patients when necessary.
However, home care should not be treated as a substitute for hospital treatment if a patient’s condition worsens. Dengue patients developing severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding or breathing difficulties should be taken to hospital immediately.
Doctors advise families to decide on home care only after consulting a physician.
