Jamaat for key role, not chaos in JS: Dr Shafiq

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said his party will play a responsible role in parliament without creating disorder, throwing files or engaging in what he described as “uncivilised” activities.

He said the opposition would raise public demands and national issues in parliament and offer proposals to help the government address them. If those proposals are ignored, Jamaat would turn to the people outside parliament, he said.

“We have decided that we will not be an opposition that throws files. We will not be an opposition that lifts chairs to kill the Speaker. We will not do any uncivilised work here,” he said. Dr Shafiqur made the remarks while exchanging views with journalists covering Jamaat’s programmes at Al-Falah Auditorium beside the party’s central office in Moghbazar in the capital on Wednesday.

“If files are thrown and disorder is created, that will not do. Then what do we have to do? Then we have to go to the people,” he said.
Referring to several national issues, the Jamaat chief said his party had repeatedly submitted notices on fertiliser, electricity, law and order, rape and killing of children, and rising prices of essential commodities, but those issues were not brought up for discussion.
