No scope to hike CNG vehicle fares: Transport Minister

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam stated on Wednesday (September 23) that there is no scope to hike fares for CNG-powered vehicles, warning of strict action against extortion.

Speaking at the Secretariat following a bilateral meeting, the minister emphasized that CNG prices have not increased, making any fare adjustment unjustified. He assured that law enforcement will take immediate steps if transport operators charge passengers excess fares.

Meanwhile, addressing water transport fare adjustments, the minister noted that launch owners demanded a 15 per cent fare hike citing rising fuel prices and management expenses. However, keeping passenger comfort in mind, the government fixed the fare increase at 7.54 per cent. The minimum fare for launch travel was raised from Tk 32 to Tk 35.

He added that while fare hikes are undesirable, global fuel price adjustments left no alternative, prompting the government to minimize public hardship while preventing transport anarchy.

In accordance with the new rates, Inland Waterways Passenger Carrier Association President Golam Nabi Alamgir confirmed that launch fares for the first 100 kilometers rose from Tk 2.95 to Tk 3.18 per kilometer. For distances beyond 100 kilometers, rates increased from Tk 2.52 to Tk 2.72 per kilometer. He added that while owners originally proposed a higher rate, they accepted the revised fare structure considering the national situation.
