Nepal avalanche leaves 10 missing in Manang

At least 10 climbers and support staff have gone missing after an avalanche struck the Himlung Himal area in Nepal’s Manang district amid heavy snowfall, The Kathmandu Post reported.

The avalanche occurred on Sunday in the Nar Phu region of Manang, at the 7,126-metre-high Himlung Himal. Rishi Bhandari, general secretary of the Nepal Expedition Operators Association, confirmed the incident.

Of the 10 missing people, two were associated with Imagine Nepal Pvt Ltd, while the remaining eight were with Himalayan Holidays Nepal.

Ram Krishna Lamichhane, director general of Nepal’s Department of Tourism, said authorities were monitoring the situation, gathering further information and coordinating search and rescue efforts.

Nepalese authorities have warned of a heightened risk of avalanches and flash floods in high-altitude districts due to heavy snowfall and persistent rainfall. The warnings have been in place since September 22.

The latest incident comes weeks after a devastating avalanche in another mountainous area triggered flash floods in Rasuwa district, causing widespread damage. Reports said the disaster killed around 1,400 people.

Authorities have since increased disaster preparedness across Nepal’s high-altitude areas, while rescue operations remain difficult because of heavy snowfall and continuous rain.
