Clashes paralyze central Dhaka; how should you commute

Commuters across Dhaka are facing severe travel delays and widespread gridlocks on Sunday (September 27) as intense traffic congestion and violent clashes bring key intersections to a complete halt.

Major arterial roads across central Dhaka are showing dark maroon stretches on real-time traffic maps, marking bumper-to-bumper standstills.

The intersection at Shahbagh, along with the Dhaka University campus, is completely paralyzed due to continuous street unrest. Surrounding roads near PG hospital and Ramna Park remain jammed.

Traffic along Mirpur Road has ground to a halt near Science Lab. Gridlocks now extend towards New Market and Elephant Road. Local clashes have forced vehicular movement to slow down to a crawl.

Central and southern transit routes are also suffering. Heavy congestion stretches from Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue toward Karwan Bazar and Tejgaon. Main roads leading to Motijheel, Saydabad, and Jatrabari are experiencing prolonged delays.

Authorities urge residents to avoid non-essential trips to Shahbagh, Science Lab, New Market, and Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue.

Commuters traveling North-South are strongly advised to use the Dhaka Metro Rail (MRT Line 6) to bypass surface road chaos. However, passengers should stay alert near station entrances in volatile areas.

For East-West journeys, drivers should take Hatirjheel, the Outer Circular Road, or Khilgaon flyovers. Vehicles bound for Old Dhaka or Sadarghat should take the Sadarghat–Gabtoli embankment road to avoid central choke points.

Emergency ambulances heading to DMCH or BSMMU should use peripheral roads via Chankharpul or Palashi to bypass Shahbagh.

Citizens are advised to check real-time traffic maps before stepping out, as road conditions remain unpredictable throughout the day.
