One shot dead in B'baria clash

A man was killed after being shot during a clash between two groups over establishing dominance in Banchharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria on Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Jewel Mia, son of Sentu Mia of Gopinathpur village in Nilokkha Union of Raipura upazila, Narsingdi.

At least 10 people were injured in the clash, including five who suffered gunshot wounds. The injured are receiving treatment at different hospitals.

Police recovered five bullets, five cocktails and a locally made firearm from the scene.

locals said a longstanding dispute over establishing dominance had existed between the residents of Azgar Ali Sarkar Bari and Sofu Sarkar Bari in Shantipur village. The two groups were involved in a clash on June 30.

Since then, Sofu Sarkar’s supporters had reportedly stayed away from the area.

Against this backdrop, a group of people allegedly brought from Narsingdi, led by Sofu Sarkar’s grandson Moktar Hossain, attacked the rival group early Monday, triggering the clash.

The injured were taken to Banchharampur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared Jewel dead.

Banchharampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Yasin confirmed the incident and said, "an investigation was underway. Legal action would be taken in connection with the incident, he added."
