12kg LPG cylinder prices cross Tk 2,000 amid Middle East crisis

Prices of 12-kilogram liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders have surged past Tk 2,000 in local markets due to a 25 per cent reduction in monthly imports triggered by the ongoing Middle East conflict.

On September 2, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) fixed the price of a 12kg LPG cylinder at Tk 1,585 after a Tk 13 reduction.

However, consumers are being forced to pay between Tk 2,000 and Tk 2,100 per cylinder as traders capitalize on the acute market shortfall.

Data from BERC and importers show that LPG imports dropped by 40,000 tonnes in September to 1.20 lakh tonnes, down from 1.60 lakh tonnes recorded in August.

Heightened risks along crucial maritime trade corridors such as the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz have created a severe shortage of shipping vessels while dramatically inflating freight charges.

International suppliers have cut contracted shipments by up to 20 per cent, while cargo premiums have jumped from $160 per tonne to between $260 and $400 per tonne, according to the LPG Operators Association of Bangladesh (LOAB).

BERC Chairman Jalal Ahmed attributed the September supply deficit to delayed vessel arrivals for specific companies, assuring that a meeting with importers will be held shortly to resolve the crisis.
