Heavy rain kills 56 in Uttar Pradesh, affects three other states

Heavy rain and rain-related incidents have killed 56 people in India’s Uttar Pradesh over the past 48 hours, while Odisha, Bihar and Chhattisgarh have also reported flooding, crop damage and disruption.
According to the Uttar Pradesh relief department, the state recorded 97.6 mm of rainfall in the 48 hours from September 25 morning to September 27 morning. Heavy rain and storms also injured 46 people and damaged more than 1,020 houses. Excessive rainfall was recorded in 56 of the state’s 75 districts.
Heavy rain has also caused significant damage to crops in Uttar Pradesh, with several areas reporting waterlogging and flood-like conditions.
More than 73,000 people have been affected by heavy rain across 10 districts of Odisha over the past 48 hours, while more than 40,000 people have been evacuated to safer locations, officials said.
Southern Odisha has been particularly affected. Koraput, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Ganjam and Gajapati are among the affected districts. The government assessment said 721 houses were partially or fully damaged and 4,480 hectares of cropland were affected.
Heavy rain in Nepal and its catchment areas, along with continued water release from the Valmikinagar barrage, has affected Bihar.
Water levels in the Gandak river have risen, with water entering homes in parts of West Champaran. More than 2,000 villagers were forced to move to safer locations, according to officials.
On Monday, the Gandak recorded a peak discharge of 543,500 cusecs at the Valmikinagar barrage at 5 AM, according to the Bihar Water Resources Department.
Heavy rain has caused flooding and waterlogging in several parts of Chhattisgarh, disrupting road connectivity and forcing authorities to close schools in eight districts.
A 40-year-old farmer drowned in Kondagaon on Friday after falling into a swollen drain while trying to catch fish from a waterlogged paddy field.
Schools were closed in Dantewada, Bijapur, Kondagaon, Kanker, Bastar, Gariaband, Dhamtari and Durg. Quarterly examinations in government schools in the affected areas were also postponed.
