74 sued over attack, looting at Savar madrasa

A case has been filed against 74 people, including the acting president of a BNP unit, over an alleged attack and looting at Tahfizul Quranil Karim Fazil Madrasa in Sripur area of Ashulia, Savar.

Madrasa authorities filed the case with Ashulia Police Station in the early hours of Monday. The police confirmed the matter on Monday night.

According to police, 14 people have been named in the case, while 60 to 70 others have been listed as unidentified accused.

Imam Hasan, 50, has been named the prime accused, while Zakir Hossain, 47, has been made the second accused. Zakir is the acting president of Dhamsona Union BNP in Savar.

According to the case statement, the accused had been involved in a longstanding dispute with the madrasa authorities over the madrasa market.

On Sunday around 4:30 PM, the accused allegedly entered the madrasa and market premises in a group carrying locally made weapons on the instructions of Imam Hasan and attempted to take control of the market.

When madrasa security in-charge Md Altab Hossain, 65, tried to stop them, the accused allegedly threatened to kill him.

The case statement further alleges that the attackers vandalised furniture, doors, windows and around 20 CCTV cameras, causing an estimated loss of Tk 15 lakh. They also allegedly looted Tk 20 lakh in cash kept in a madrasa locker, along with two laptops and 10 computer monitors.

Zakir Hossain denied the allegations, saying Syed Sanjid had no connection with the madrasa and had occupied it forcibly. He claimed that local residents had driven them out of the premises.

Ashulia Police Station Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam, the investigating officer said, "efforts were underway to arrest the accused and police were conducting raids at different locations."
