Russia urges Iran to remain in nuclear non-proliferation agreement

MOSCOW, Sept 29: Moscow does not want Tehran to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and expects it to remain a signatory, the Kremlin says.
Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov was responding to comments by Iranian officials about a possible pullout of the global nuclear agreement. Under the treaty, Iran is committed to neither developing or acquiring nuclear weapons.
Russia and Iran have close ties under a strategic cooperation treaty.
Paul Musgrave of Georgetown University in Qatar says there were “really serious talks” during theUN General Assembly on ending the war on Iran despite public rhetoric from the US president.
“I think people need to discount bluster and Trumpian statements. Continually, through mediators in Pakistan and Qatar, we have seen a lot of engagement,” he told Al Jazeera.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has told US media that the Strait of Hormuz is open and, with the exception of Iranian oil, there is almost as much oil flowing through as there was before the start of the US-Israel war on Iran.
He said, however, that if Tehran had a nuclear weapon, it would use it to “blackmail the world and to kill people”.
“It would control the straits, charge a toll, and decide who got energy and who did not,” Rubio said during an interview with Fox News, adding that such a scenario represented “an unacceptable risk”.
