Technical glitch halted Rooppur nuclear fuel transit, claims Pakistan

Pakistan has issued a formal clarification regarding its denial of airspace clearance to a Russian flight carrying uranium fuel for Bangladesh's Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, describing the decision as a technical and procedural matter rather than a political one.

In an official statement released on Tuesday (September 29), the High Commission of Pakistan in Dhaka affirmed that requests for diplomatic overflight permissions are reviewed strictly in accordance with regulatory guidelines and civil aviation protocols.

The High Commission explained that the incident involved technical arrangements regarding flight routing that required multi-agency coordination, which can occasionally result in adjustments to flight schedules.

Emphasizing the importance Islamabad attaches to its bilateral ties with Dhaka, the mission urged viewing the issue in its technical context rather than lending weight to narratives that could strain relations.

Earlier, Minister for Science and Technology Fakir Mahbub Anam confirmed that the shipment was scheduled to arrive on September 24, but was suspended due to the clearance denial.

Following the disruption, Russian state atomic agency Rosatom indicated that uranium deliveries for Unit 2 would resume in October, with plans to complete all pending shipments by the end of the year.
