Md Kamruzzaman: A globally recognised criminology researcher

Alongside his responsibilities as a police officer, Bangladesh Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Kamruzzaman has been pursuing research as part of his professional and social commitment. His research focuses on criminology and victimology, particularly the causes of crime, the realities faced by victims and possible ways to build a crime-free society.

A former student of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU), Kamruzzaman has secured a place in the international list of researchers for the sixth consecutive year.

According to the AD Scientific Index 2026, around 2.433 million researchers from 24,672 institutions across 221 countries have been included in the ranking. Bangladesh has 19,375 researchers representing 222 institutions on the list.

Kamruzzaman ranks eighth among 207 researchers from MBSTU and 1,055th in the overall ranking of Bangladeshi researchers.

In the ‘Law and Legal Studies’ category, he has secured first position at the university level and second position nationally for research in criminology and victimology.

For Kamruzzaman, the achievement is not merely a matter of personal recognition or securing a position in an international ranking. He considers research a means of identifying real problems in society and exploring effective solutions.

“Since beginning my professional career in 2019, my posting to the Planning and Research Department at Police Headquarters has made it easier for me to continue my research. I am working with the goal of contributing to a crime-free society through research,” he said.

Kamruzzaman does not consider policing and research to be separate areas. According to him, his experience in law enforcement provides an opportunity to understand crime and the experiences of victims from close range, while research enables him to analyse issues more deeply and explore the underlying causes of social problems.

He began his professional career in 2019 and has remained involved in research since then. He is currently serving at the Dhaka Metro unit of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI). Since 2021, he has been included in the AD Scientific Index every year.

Alongside his professional duties and research, Kamruzzaman has also been involved in educational and social welfare activities for many years. In 2010, he established the Batighar Adarsha Library in Chourakarra village in Tangail, his home village.

The initiative was launched with the aim of creating opportunities for people to read books and encouraging a culture of learning. Over the years, the library has expanded its activities, including initiatives to establish mini-libraries at salons, bus stands and railway stations.

Kamruzzaman credits his teachers, colleagues and classmates at MBSTU for their support and encouragement throughout his journey.

“The contribution of my university teachers, colleagues and classmates to this achievement is undeniable,” he said.

The AD Scientific Index publishes its researcher rankings based on several indicators, including researchers’ performance over the previous five years, H-index, i10-index and citation scores. The ranking covers researchers from different countries across 12 categories.

For Kamruzzaman, however, continuing this research journey is not simply about securing a position in an international ranking. His primary goal is to gain a deeper understanding of crime and social problems through research and use that knowledge for the benefit of society.
