Bangladesh Bank keeps policy rate at 9.5 per cent

Bangladesh Bank has kept its policy rate unchanged at 9.5 per cent for the October-December quarter, introducing its first-ever quarterly monetary policy after previously following a six-month cycle.

The central bank announced the decision on Wednesday, noting that inflation fell to 8.26 per cent in August from 9.16 per cent in June. However, it said inflationary pressures remain, while economic activity continues to be subdued.

According to Bangladesh Bank, inflation remains exposed to supply and cost pressures stemming from high and volatile global energy prices, the prolonged Middle East conflict, disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, the recent increase in administered fuel prices and the possible impact of implementing the new national pay scale.

At the same time, economic growth remains under pressure, reflected in weak industrial production, slow private-sector credit growth and a low Purchasing Managers' Index.

The central bank said its key challenge is to support economic activity without disrupting the ongoing process of bringing inflation down. The Monetary Policy Committee will monitor domestic and global macro-financial developments and adjust its monetary stance when necessary.

Bangladesh Bank also kept the Standing Lending Facility (SLF), through which commercial banks borrow overnight from the central bank, at 11 per cent.

The Standing Deposit Facility (SDF), which allows banks to deposit excess funds with the central bank overnight and earn interest, was retained at 7.50 per cent.
