Former OC Rakibul sent to jail after remand

Former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cantonment Police Station Rakibul Hasan was sent to jail on Wednesday (September 30) after completing seven days in remand in a sedition case.

Police produced Rakibul before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman and sought an order to keep him in jail. After hearing, the court granted the plea.

DB Gulshan Zone team Inspector Md Zehad Hossain, also the investigation officer of the case, produced Rakibul before the court.

Prosecution Sub-Inspector Tarekur Rahman confirmed that no bail petition was filed on behalf of Rakibul.

The court had earlier granted him five days’ remand on Thursday, followed by another two days on Monday, taking his total remand to seven days.

Rakibul came under investigation after an audio recording circulated on social media in his name, in which a person was heard discussing the possible return of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, the government, administration, army and police.

The authenticity of the audio as Rakibul’s recording has not been independently confirmed.

Following the circulation of the audio, Dhaka Metropolitan Police formed a three-member committee to investigate the matter. Rakibul was later questioned at the DB office and withdrawn from Cantonment Police Station.
