The bodies of two children who went missing while fishing in the Turag River in Tongi of Gazipur, were recovered nearly 23 hours later on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Md Abu Yunus, 10, and Nirob, 9. They were residents of Boubazar area in Tongi.
A Fire Service and Civil Defence diving team recovered Abu Yunus’s body from beneath the railway bridge over the Turag River around 1pm. Nirob’s body was recovered from the river around 4:10 PM.
According to family members, Abu Yunus was the son of Shahjahan, a tenant in the Boubazar area, while Nirob was the son of Shah Alam, another tenant in the same house.
Md Shahin Alam, senior station officer of Tongi Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the rescue operation began after the two children went missing on Wednesday afternoon.
The operation was suspended around 7:30 PM due to poor visibility and adverse conditions and resumed on Thursday morning.
The children went missing after being swept away by the river current while fishing under the Jamai Bazar railway bridge in Tongi on Wednesday afternoon.
